Regulatory

Supervision of clinical trials in the Czech Republic falls under the responsibility of the State Institute for Drug Control (SUKL), which now is under direct control of the Ministry of Health. One of the main missions of the institute is to ensure that all medicines available on the Czech market meet quality, safety, and efficacy standards. All clinical trials performed in the Czech Republic must be approved by the Ethics Committee. Czech Republic has been a EU member since 2004 and its legislation has been almost fully harmonized with the EU including the Drug Law, which simplifies approval procedures.

Pharmaceutical Industry & Clinical Trials Market

The pharmaceutical industry is one of the key manufacturing sectors in the Czech Republic with around 2,5 billion worth of government funds over the past ten years.

The Czech Republic has a solid clinical research infrastructure and a supportive regulatory environment with over 250 hospitals (including university hospitals), 100 clinics and other healthcare institutions, both public and private. The Czech universal healthcare system is favorable to patient enrolment in clinical trials in every possible way. Each healthcare structure, such as public hospital or group of state-owned outpatient clinics, has a special division where patients can be informed about their options and directed to the relevant trial, which makes it easier to find and enroll patients.

The great potential for clinical research is facilitated by modern equipment and qualified specialists. The Czech Republic is highly competitive in terms of patient recruitment.

Medical System in Czech Republic

Healthcare services are highly accessible in the Czech Republic. There is a rapid growth of private well-equipped health care facilities, which are frequently focused on conducting clinical trials.

The national healthcare system of the Czech Republic is regulated primarily by the Public Health Insurance Act. Participation in the public healthcare insurance system is mandatory for every person with permanent residency in the Czech Republic. The public health insurance system fully covers preventive medical examinations, diagnosis of diseases, and treatments.
